Much of obesity has a genetic influence. Genes encoding for the body’s production of and response to the protein leptin play a major role in the regulation of body weight. Leptin functions as part of a signaling pathway that can inhibit food intake and regulate energy expenditure to reduce adipose tissue. This protein is also involved in the regulation of immune and inflammatory responses.
